Excision made his way to the Mile High City at the end of May to commence the second leg of the Nexus Tour. The dubstep artist, a packed lineup, and his biggest production yet took over the Denver Coliseum’s lot for two nights.
Unofficially known as the Bass Capital, Denver has served as a hotspot for bass and heavy dubstep. Fans follow wherever Excision will be in Colorado, whether it be Mission Ballroom, 1st Bank Center, or the Coliseum.
Day One
The first night of Mile High was a journey through bass-filled dance music. Steller opened the weekend, bringing her sonic landscape of wonky bass before Denver native Jkyl & Hyde to continue the energy. Emorfik brought the angry riddim and was followed by LAYZ who kept the energy up with her signature dubstep and higher tempos.
After her set, LAYZ made her way into the crowd, receiving support from attendees. The artist danced just as hard as fans as Ray Volpe teased new tracks and flipped songs like “Ratatata” by Skrillex and Fred again.. and “Cheerleader” by Porter Robinson. Before Eptic came on, Ray Volpe confirmed that he would be returning to Denver this year.
Eptic took the stage with unique visuals based on old-school, pixelated video games while lasers while the sun went down and lasers became more defined. Wooli followed, dropping several collaborations with artists like SVDDEN DEATH and Subtronics. He also teased an ID with Ganja White Night and “Name Drop VIP.”
The man himself took the stage after, giving fans the audiovisual production he had promised. Musically, it was a classic Excision set for those who have seen him before and kept the crowd moving. The viral Shrek visuals made an appearance, as well as new 3D art and laser programs.
Day Two
On the second day, the crowd and music remained as lively as the first. AlienPark opened the second day, followed by RIOT’s debut on the Nexus Tour. The duo did not disappoint as they played to the early crowd, getting them ready for dubstep DJ Sippy. Two massive back-to-back from Hairitage and Drinkurwater and Dion Timmer and Calcium came after.
People gathered on the mound of dirt west of the stage while others could be spotted looking through holes in the fence surrounding the entrance as ATLiens went between riddim and bass-heavy trap. The otherworldly beings played songs like “Animals” by Martin Garrix and “Satisfaction” by Benny Benassi.
Black Tiger Sex Machine served as the special guest of the weekend and they brought the energy with their Anime Show. Specially curated visuals aligned with the masked trio’s rarely disappointing mid-tempo bass.
A quick trip behind the sound booth opened another world to the show with large gaps between groups and attendees who went solo. Some used the space to unleash their inner headbanger, some were shaking their heads to the beat, and some chilled on the ground.
Despite being a less-than-ideal spot for sound quality, sitting directly behind the booth allowed the entire production to be seen. Lasers filled the area as the visuals Excision has become known for played behind him. The producer played a mix of remixes from artists like Hedex and Quackon and throwback songs like “Drowning” and “Night Shine.” The weekend of Mile High ended with “Robo Kitty.”
