It feels like yesterday that Subtronics dropped his debut album FRACTALS. Now, the bass music producer is coming in hot with his sophomore record TESSERACT. With sixteen songs that launch the listener into a fourth dimension, the record is heavy dubstep focused with beat changes throughout.
Subtronics shocked fans last week when he revealed that he would drop his second album. He took it a step further when he released “Alien Communication,” one of its longest songs at 5 minutes, the night before the album’s release. This and “Omnidirectional” served as the two solo singles of TESSERACT.
TESSERACT includes several collaborations that listeners are familiar with like “Mind Pluck” with HOL! and “Asteroid” with Excision. “Black Ice” with Rezz and “Insidious” featuring Grabbitz have all claimed a spot on the tracklist.
The album opens with “Cottage Gore,” diving right into low frequencies and otherworldly sounds. Caitlyn Scarlett begins “Only Star You See,” one of the only drum and bass songs on TESSERACT. “Amnesia” feels like old-school Subtronics with the samples from a viral video like the first iconic hook, “They must have amnesia, they forgot that I’m him.”
The bass-heavy “Afternoon Coffee (Slide)” featuring Ronzo comes after with a prominent piano melody before “Parabola Paradox (Slap It)” with Kwengface calls for a planetary takeover. “Interface Wheel” follows before “Dreams (Plasma Reflex)” featuring Crooked Bangs brings the listener to a chill, bubbly place.
The next songs, “Reality Distortion” and “Quantum Queso”, flip that idea on its head with heavy dubstep drops. “Buried Alive” draws TESSERACT to a close with Jem Cooke’s dreamy vocals, a resounding kick, and a dramatic piano arrangement.
TESSERACT is a collection of two years of work. Upon announcing the release, Subtronics wrote, “This is so f*****g surreal honestly I can’t believe I’m finally posting this, the entire last two years of my life have led up to this.” He has promised that he has more surprises coming after the official release.
On top of the massive sophomore album, Subtronics is kicking off his TESSERACT Tour on February 16th. The DJ will be playing around the United States until mid-March. He is also taking over Red Rocks on May 23rd and 24th for the fourth Cyclops Rocks.
There is something distinct about his sound and each track on TESSERACT remains uniquely Subtronics. The album is out now on all streaming platforms. Listen to it on Spotify here:
