Following headlining Coachella with Fred again.. and Four Tet, Skrillex proceeded to play arguably one of the greatest (and longest) Red Rocks sets of all time, making history by seamlessly weaving generations of genres together. Leaving the audience hanging on to every last beat, Skrillex captivated the crowd without a moment to spare from start to finish with no breaks, and a surprise at every turn.
To kick off an unforgettable night, Skrillex began the magic right in the middle of Red Rocks for a 360 set. Rarely are 360s ever done at Red Rocks, and rarely is so little production used for so much of the set. With no LED wall and simple lighting production for the majority of the night, Skrillex still had a sea of fans lose their minds over and over as a result of their authentic love for the music.
Skrillex proved that no break is too long for the dance music king to return with a bang, playing massive shows and festivals every week and two albums at a time. There’s no doubt that everything Skrillex has accomplished and his undeniable display of artistic talent has been setting the stage for generations of producers to come.
The minute Skrillex announced that following his hiatus, he’d be taking over Red Rocks Amphitheater for a 5-hour set, the internet went into a frenzy predicting what this could mean. While many suspected Skrillex would phone a friend or include special guests in his performance, many speculated whether the set would be a cultivation of his old-school tracks or more from his new albums.
Skrillex decided to blow minds everywhere and proceeded to deliver the most eccentric possible set packed with almost every subgenre. Skrillex successfully exceeded the varying expectations of everyone in attendance, and then some. As he alternated genres and tracks with such effortless precision, the crowd energy only continued to flourish. Playing new mixes of old classics, house, rap, DnB, dubstep, and countless other genres; Skrillex managed to captivate such a massive crowd through each transition, keeping jaws dropping all night.
A quickly sold-out Red Rocks crowd was filled with kind hearts and great energy at every turn. Many Red Rocks regulars have said that the energy of each and every person there was top-notch, easily navigating through the crowd and having drastically more space than usual to dance. Seeing some of the most iconic tracks of our generation played out back to back lead to collective tears shed by fans, artists, security guards, and even fans watching from the hills.
On April 29, Skrillex returned authentic love and light to the dance music scene, miraculously cultivating a crowd with nothing but positive energy, love for each other, and music. Captivated by every last drop and hanging on to each second, fans will never forget this set. Fans can only hope the magical energy will trickle over into the rest of the dance music community for a long time.
